GENERAL SUMMARY: Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all. Primary responsibility is the provision of medication distributive functions and pharmacy operational tasks, which includes but is not limited to assisting the pharmacist with all duties of preparing and dispensing of medications, inventory management, and regulatory compliance. Performs duties necessary for the effective daily operation of all department services and programs. Accurately responds to medication dispensing requests, prepares medications for pharmacist final review/check, delivers checked medications, and returns unused or expired medications to appropriate pharmacy areas.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Pharmacy Operations •Actively performs all pharmacy technician functions and maintains active proficiency in standard work parameters, hospital and pharmacy specific computer systems, and operational programs •Maintains operational expertise and competency and actively provides coverage of at least two of the following: •Central/distributive pharmacy operations •Sterile compounding •Decentral/ Automated Dispensing Cabinet delivery pharmacy operations •Controlled substance Handling AND at least one of the following: •Hazardous Medication Sterile Compounding •Quality Assurance & USP required sampling •Technician Inventory Check (i.e., tech check tech where authorized) •Medication History •Supporting Clinical Services •Purchasing and Inventory Mnagement -OR Maintains knowledge of the following: •Central/Distributive Pharmacy •IV Room/Sterile compounding •Decentral/ Automated Dispensing Cabinet delivery pharmacy operations •Controlled Substances handling
AND Performs primary job function as: •Medication History technician OR Inventory specialist •Participates in appropriate utilization of medication automation, technology, and computer systems. Maintains expertise in electronic health record system and be able to accurately interpret electronic records as needed •Accurately completes medication inventories and accurately prepares and dispenses patientspecific medication doses. Prevents improper drug, dose, dosage form selection, expiration dating, and barcode scanning issues when checking products •Performs oral and injectable compounding, if applicable •Carries out special projects or assignments as directed by supervisor or manager •Understands how to handle process and appropriately dispose of all waste materials, including all levels of hazardous waste, within the department. Knowledgeable about the appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Hazardous Medication Spill Kits in the event of a hazardous medication spill.
Pharmacy Practice •Facilitates medication safety practices by identifying and reporting potential medication errors such as look-alike sound-alike medications. •Prepares and delivers medication in an accurate, safe and timely manner Clinical Pharmacy Services •Supports practice in all pharmacy areas and clinical services •Collaborates with other pharmacy staff •Collaborates with care providers and Pharmacists to optimize care and improve services Teamwork and Inter-Professional Collaboration •Presents to assigned areas on time and ready to work and does not exhibit unscheduled absenteeism •Assures continuity of care between shifts, among pharmacy staff assignments, and across pharmacy practice areas •Works effectively with all members of the healthcare team to ensure the best outcome for the patient •Demonstrates sensitivity to the perspective of the patient, caregiver, or health care colleague in all communications •Actively supports teammates (pharmacists, technicians, managers) •Uses effective negotiation skills to resolve conflicts •Demonstrates through behavior AdventHealth's service standards of Own It, Make It Easy, Love Me, and Keep Me Safe. KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE STRONGLY PREFERRED: •Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, problemsolving, and customer service skills •Flexibility and willingness to adapt to changes as necessary •Ability to interact constructively with supervisors, peers, and external customers •Ability to follow direction from formal management personnel and work well under direct supervision of a pharmacist •Ability to identify, follow up, and resolve discrepancies •Ability to identify, mitigate, and assist in resolving pharmacy operational or program issues •Ability to keep accurate and complete records •Knowledge of medical terminology •Must be able to read, write and speak conversational English •Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED: •Ability to teach pharmacy technician students •Proficiency in hospital computer system technology and automation •Knowledge and competence in aseptic techniques, hazardous drug compounding and USP 795, 797 and 800 standards (if applicable) •Knowledge and competence in the medication reconciliation process (if applicable)
Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: High School Grad or Equiv and 1 years experience
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: REQUIRED:•High School degree or equivalent •One year of hospital pharmacy experience (Retail or ambulatory experience acceptable for medication history function in lieu of hospital experience)
PREFERRED: •Associates degree or technical degree in a related field or specific certification related to the position, preferably in a physical science, business or healthcare
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED: • PTCB - Certified Pharmacy Technician • Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians • National Healthcareer Association • Sterile Compounding & Aseptic Technique-IV Cert Course • Registered Pharmacy Technician
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION: REQUIRED: •Applicable State Pharmacy Technician Registration (RPT) •Sterile Compounding Certification, if applicable per state legislation •Current certification from Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ICPT), or from the National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
